In these times of flourish, knights adorned their helmets with feathers. It was during a tournament that King Henry II, son of François I, died in 1559 after fighting with Montgomery, his captain of the Scottish guard, who stabbed his lance into his eye. The day after this tragedy, tournaments were abolished in favor of carousels, exercises of pure equestrian parade. This scarf design evokes the tension between gallantry represented by feathered helmets and the harsh reality of those times, where martial spectacle could end in tragedy.
